Botswana: Success story to continue under new leader 31 March 2008 - Vice President Seretse Khama Ian Khama takes over the leadership of Botswana this week and is expected to stay on an economic and political course that has made the country one of Africa's rare success stories. President Festus Mogae will retire after nearly a decade in power. Khama will inherit one of the best performing economies in southern Africa. China: Olympic Beijing tries to kick smoking 29 March 2008 - A ban on smoking in most Beijing public places, similar to efforts in major North American, European, and Asian cities, is expected to take effect in May, aimed at meeting China's pledge of a smoke-free Olympics. Romania mulls national ban on Monsanto genetically modified maize 29 March 2008 - Romania's environment ministry wants to impose a national cultivation ban on Monsanto MON 810 genetically modified maize this year, minister Attila Korodi said on Thursday. (more)
Britain names new Russian envoy to help improve ties 28 March 2008 - Britain named an experienced eastern Europe expert as its new envoy to Russia on Friday and said it was seeking opportunities to improve ties with Moscow, which are at their chilliest since the Cold War. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Brown establish warmer relations 28 March 2008 - Britain and France vowed to respond to financial market problems on Thursday and called on banks to declare the full extent of the damage to their operations caused by the credit crunch. President Nicolas Sarkozy called for a new 'Franco-British brotherhood' in a speech to parliament on Wednesday. Hungarian government teeters on edge of collapse 31 March 2008 - Hungary's government moved closer to collapse on Monday after Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany sacked a minister from the junior coalition party in a move that could spell the end of economic reforms. European Union approves Syngenta biotech maize for import 30 March 2008 - The European Union has approved imports of a genetically modified (GM) maize type for sale across its 27 national markets for the next 10 years, European Commission officials said on Friday. EU law allows for rubberstamp GMO approvals when ministers cannot agree after a certain time. Since 2004, the European Commission has approved a series of GM imports -- nearly all maize -- in this way, outraging green groups. (more)
Israel: River Jordan a 'sewage pipe' 30 March 2008 - The continued dumping of untreated or partially treated sewage into rivers and streams is the number one source of dangerous pollution in Israel, the Ministry for Environmental protection has said. Municipalities are responsible for sewage treatment, but high costs of treating sewage and building new treatment plants have prompted many local councils to dump the sewage wherever they can, ministry officials said. Chile: Rocks, tear gas in annual youth protests 29 March 2008 - Masked youths threw stones at police who responded by firing tear gas and water cannon in the Chilean capital on Friday at the start of annual protests against the government and the country's free-market system. Dozens of youths, some in school uniforms, threw objects into the Santiago's main street, the Alameda. Asia: UN says continent must reverse massive deforestation trend 27 March 2008 - Parts of Asia are losing more than 28,000 square kilometres (10,800 square miles) of forest every year, a trend that must to be reversed immediately to fight climate change, a United Nations report said on Thursday. South Korea pulls its officials from North Korea 27 March 2008 - South Korea withdrew officials from a joint economic office with North Korea at Pyongyang's request Thursday in a diplomatic spat stemming from Seoul's new tougher stance on the North's nuclear disarmament. The North made the demand Monday after South Korea's unification minister said Seoul would hold off on expanding the joint-Korean industrial zone in a North Korean border city until the dispute over Pyongyang's nuclear programmes was resolved, Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Ho-nyeon said. Argentina: People take to streets as farm conflict deepens 26 March 2008 - Several thousand protesters took to the streets of Argentina's capital on Tuesday after President Cristina Fernandez refused to back down on a tax hike that has sparked a two-week strike by farmers. The farmers have blocked roads with tractors and paralyzed markets across the country in the biggest conflict to face Fernandez since she took office in December. (more)
